ABOUT

ChuffList logs every time somebody on television says they're chuffed, and rules on whether they really were.

It's a joke about a word and about television, never about people. Presenters and well-known people are named; everyone else is described exactly as the programme showed them.

TAKEDOWNS

If you appear in a sighting and would rather not, email hello@chufflist.co.uk and it comes down within seven days, no questions asked.

HOW A SIGHTING IS JUDGED

  1. It was said on the programme. We log what went out, with the time it was said. A tip-off, a tweet or a newspaper only tells us where to look; the programme is the proof.
  2. Whose word was it? If someone else said "chuffed" first and the person agreed, that's a leading question. It counts, but we note who led.
  3. Is it about now? "I'm chuffed" counts. "I'll be chuffed if I get to week 8" is a forecast, not a feeling, so it's ruled Hypothetical and doesn't count yet. It only counts if the condition comes true and they say it on screen, in the present tense: "I'm chuffed." Until then, we wait, and we check back. If we know for sure the condition didn't come true, the forecast is closed and stamped Rejected. Added 12 October 2026, from Stacey Hart, chuffed if she gets to week 8.
  4. Corrections stand. If someone changes what they said before the sentence is out ("week 7 - week 8"), the first version is withdrawn. Only what they settled on is judged. Added 12 October 2026, from Stacey Hart, chuffed if she gets to week 8.
  5. Heard but not seen. If the picture cuts away as they say it but it is plainly their voice, the chuff stands. We don't guess why the editors cut away. Added 12 October 2026, from Caleb Slater, chuffed to bits.
  6. Is it the feeling at all? A steam train, a chough, a surname or a line from a script is not a chuff.
  7. How chuffed? Scored from the words used, not the number of times. A chuff that doesn't count scores 0. The scale: 1 Mildly chuffed, 2 Chuffed, 3 Well chuffed, 4 Chuffed to bits, 5 Mint balls.
  8. More than one? Every chuff in a sighting is logged with its time. Two or more that count earn a Double or Triple chuff badge. Ones that don't count, don't. Added 12 October 2026, from Rob Davies, chuffed to be back.
  9. Who gets the credit? A presenter or judge is credited with a chuff only when they caused the feeling: they did the thing, a handshake say, or their verdict on the work made it. Asking the question, or praise that only gives someone the moment to say it, just draws the word out; even "you must be chuffed" doesn't make anyone chuffed (that's a leading question, rule 2). Being in the room isn't enough, and when an award does it, the award gets the credit. Credits make the chuff aura. Added 12 October 2026, from Stacey Hart, well chuffed.
  10. A blank face marks it down. The words set the score (rule 7), but if the face is absolutely blank as they say it, shell-shocked, showing nothing at all, it drops one. A smile that arrives a moment late still counts; a face that never shows anything doesn't. If the face isn't on screen, this rule can't apply. Added 12 October 2026, from Rosie Brandreth-Poynter, chuffed with second.
  11. Say that again? If someone checks they heard it right ("You're right chuffed?") and the chuff is said again, the question and the repeat only confirm the first chuff. They aren't new ones: they count in Chuffs said, but not towards a Double or Triple chuff. Added 15 October 2026, from Tracey from Derbyshire, right chuffed, said twice, counted once.

The rules grow with the sightings. Each new case chisels a little more off the block of chuff data, and when one raises a question the rules hadn't answered, the new rule says where it came from. The aim is the true truth.

THE VERDICTS

VERIFIED CHUFF
First person, unprompted. Nobody put the word in their mouth.
LEADING QUESTION
Someone else said "chuffed" first, as a question or a prompt, and the person agreed.
HEARSAY
Someone else reports the chuffedness. The chuffed person doesn't say it on screen.
BY PROXY
First person and unprompted, but on someone else's behalf.
PRO CHUFF
The presenter says they're chuffed. Admissible, but it's their job to be pleased.
DISPUTED
The word was said, but the face, tone or context says otherwise.
NOT CHUFFED
The word came up and was refused.
STRUCK OUT
Not the feeling at all: an expletive, a steam train, a chough, a surname.
SCRIPTED
A character said it. The actor was paid to be chuffed.
RETRACTED
Chuffed, then un-chuffed in the same breath.
HYPOTHETICAL
Chuffed on a condition: if, when, once. A forecast, not a feeling, so it does not count yet. It counts only if the condition comes true and they say it on screen, in the present tense.

PRIVACY

No cookies, and nothing is stored on your device unless you pick an era, which this browser remembers for next time. Visits are counted by Cloudflare Web Analytics, which doesn't use cookies or identify you. If you email hello@chufflist.co.uk, the message is read by the person who runs ChuffList, used only to reply or to deal with what you asked, and deleted once it's done.

PICTURES AND CLIPS

Stills belong to the broadcasters, so a sighting shows one credited frame at most, or an official clip that loads only when you press play. When a player won't allow a screenshot, the still is a photograph of the screen, and says so.
